Archeologists unearth artifacts at Wiesbaden construction site

WIESBADEN, Germany — Almost 2,000 years ago, several Roman military bases were established along the Rhine River in western Germany, including one in Mainz – a large Roman city known as Moguntiacum. Because of its strategic location, historians surmise the base housed as many as four Roman legions.

So it was no surprise that archeologists discovered Roman artifacts and ruins in the middle of an Army family housing construction project at the south end of the Wiesbaden Army Airfield – less than five miles from Mainz.

Opinion: Residents encouraged to save energy to support the troops

SCHOFIELD BARRACKS, Hawaii – Are your electric consumption habits contributing to the issue of national security?

That may appear to be an extreme question for activities as seemingly benign as running an air conditioner around the clock, or leaving lights, televisions and computers on in an empty room. However, your usage at home may be contributing to the high prices that the Department of Defense (DoD) has to pay in order to enable our Soldiers on the frontlines to do their jobs.

USACE engineers in Europe LEED the way with green building projects

According to a 2008 U.S. Green Building Council report, green buildings can save millions in annual operational costs, generate new jobs and reduce greenhouse gas production.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has championed this effort by creating a policy in January 2008 to implement Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, or LEED, in Army military construction projects.

But designing and constructing certified “green” facilities in Europe is a challenge for USACE Europe District project and program managers, who are held to the German government’s construction process under ABG 75, said Rich Gifaldi, sustainable engineering manager for the Europe District.

Actually, I think the Marine Corps (and to a very slightly lesser extent, the post-Shinsecki Army) is already there, thank heaven.
